Chinese Herbal Medicine is one of the oldest health care systems in the world.
Chinese Herbal Medicine
The theory of Chinese Medicine provides a comprehensive way of looking at the body. Often, seemingly unrelated symptoms will all correspond to one Chinese Medical diagnosis. In treating the body based on your individual diagnosis, we are able to address the root cause of your body’s imbalance
There are hundreds of individual substances commonly used in Chinese herbal medicine. Most of these herbs are derived from part of a plant, but some are sourced from animals and minerals. Several herbs are quite common and you may find them in and around your home such as ginger, cinnamon, garlic, chrysanthemum and peony flowers.
Chinese herbs are most commonly prescribed in a formula or mixture of around 8-15 individual herbs. The subtle characteristics of each individual herb has been studied over the years, and these formulas have been carefully crafted to create a delicate synergy between the herbs and in the body. Most of the herbal formulas I prescribe have been compacted into a pill form making them very easy to take.
These herbs are extensively tested for safety and undergo tests for toxic materials, lead, bacteria and many other potentially harmful substances. Sara trusts the safety of the herbs prescribed and encourage patients to ask questions if they have any concerns.
Knowing when and how to prescribe Chinese Herbal formulas is a very important component to the success of your TCM treatment. Although herbs are not needed in every case, there are times when they make all the difference. Sara has been well trained in the use of Chinese herbal formulas and knows how to safely and effectively add them to your treatment plan.
Chinese herbal formulas are prescribed based on a detailed health intake and your Chinese diagnosis. Formulas are rarely prescribed based on a specific symptom. For this reason, herbal formulas are able to target the root cause of the disease. Oftentimes, seemingly unrelated symptoms are all resolved with the use of one formula.
All of the herbs used at Sara Bates Acupuncture have been extensively tested for safety and efficacy. Sara is trained in administering Chinese herbal formulas and customizes every treatment plan according to your needs.
